Whether you are an experienced seamstress or just starting out, knowing how to measure correctly is crucial to the outcome of your project. font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">It is better to wear<strong> fitted clothes<\/strong> when measuring. Absolutely no baggy clothes. This can skew the measurements.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">It will be perfect if you can wear the lingerie you intend to wear with the final garment while taking the measurements. This is especially important for perfectly fitted clothes like a tight gown or fitted blouse\/corset. A push-up bra will make all the difference in your final look. Remember that if you intend to wear underwired, padded, push-up, or other figure-altering bras, this should be considered.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> If you plan to wear <strong>heels<\/strong> and you are making a long gown, do not forget to wear the heels or a similar one when taking measurement.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Choose a good and accurate tape measure. Keep it level (parallel to the ground) all the time you are taking horizontal measures.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Adhere to the old saying &#8211; <strong>Measure twice and cut once.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">It is best if you can get another person to take the measurements.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The person taking the measurement should be on the right side of the person.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All circumference measurements should be taken with tape measure parallel to the floor and with enough slack in tape to slide two fingers under the tape.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Do not assume that just because you sucked your breath in, the garment will turn out to be perfect. It will not. Since then, I have learned about ease too. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">You should take the measurement correctly, then add ease to the pattern according to how much ease you want. Very loose, slightly loose, fitted, tight &#8211; options are many.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">If you are measuring someone else, as soon as you have taken the measurement of a person, inquire about what ease they need for this particular garment. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Write it down.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">A minimum of 2 inches is needed for comfort, as I have added in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sewguide.com\/basic-blouse-pattern\/\">bodice pattern<\/a> here. This is my opinion and very much dependent on personal preference.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-base-background-color has-background\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Ease chart &#8211; A 6.5-inch is what I usually use; again, individual preference and also depends on the pattern.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Neck width<\/strong> &#8211; This is usually taken as 1\/12 th of the bust round &#8211; so if you have a bust round of 36 inch you should take a neck width of 3 inch. This is a very close width and you can add a 1\/2 inch for a relaxed neck.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Armhole depth<\/strong> (Armscye) &#8211; Armscye is basically the measure around your arm joint &#8211; it is taken about 1\/2 inch further from the armpit (as per the individual preference of fit). The armhole depth refers to the measure from the back nape of the neck to the bust line. This is taken according to the bust round, or as per the measurement you have made on the body. Needed for making bras, bralette tops, etc.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Waistband round<\/strong> &#8211; Decide where you will wear your skirt or waistband. Wrap the tape loosely around the spot. You should be absolutely comfortable with this measure.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Bust length<\/strong> &#8211; Measure from shoulder to bust point. (For fitted blouses &#8211; sari blouses)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Bust to Bust<\/strong> &#8211; This is measured from one bust point to the other bust point. Usually, for a person with a bust round of 36 inches or more, this is taken as 4 inches on a folded pattern, and for less than 36 inches, take this as 3.5 inches. This is needed for placing darts.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Back width<\/strong> &#8211; Taken on the back just under the shoulders. This is usually needed for making jackets, and coats.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Slit cut<\/strong> &#8211; Decide on where you want the slit of your tunic or top to be on the side seams.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Measurement under the knees &#8211; This maybe needed for trousers, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Calf round<\/strong> &#8211; Measure under the knees.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">If you have the height of a person there is a calculation prevalent with which you can find out a person&#8217;s body measurements &#8211; this assumes that he or she has average body measurements which are in the normal range. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Bust\/chest round<\/strong> = (1\/8 of your height in inches + 1&#8243;) * 4<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Waist round<\/strong> = Bust round &#8211; 4 inches.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Hip round<\/strong> = Bust round + 2 inches = waist round + 6 inches.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Shoulder measure for men<\/strong> = 1\/2 of chest round.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Across back measure<\/strong> = 1\/6 of chest round+ 1&#8243;.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;
